Contoocook, NH – May 14, 2012 – Here at Prototek Sheet Metal Manufacturing, we have always realised the importance of visibility on the web since 1990 when we created our own initial web site. Since then, we have been ever expanding our web presence by undergoing site design and coding upgrades to retain quick site load times and user interface simplicity, while including our full capabilities of quick turn sheet metal and machining prototypes and short run productions. As the times change, so do we. We believe it to be imperative to remain cutting-edge in all related fields.

Prototek is proud to announce that we are now mobile friendly on all platforms, including Android, Apple, Blackberry, and Windows phones. We have a separate website for customers who wish to find us on their smart phones. Statistics show that 1/3 of all internet searches are completed from mobile devices now, and statisticians believe by the year 2015, more than half of all web searched will be completed using mobile devices. Evolving with the industry standards and remaining the best at what we do has always been our strong suit, just as quick turn around times of precision metal parts has always been our niche. We hope customers enjoy our new mobile friendly site, but if one wishes, one may go directly to the original site by a link at the bottom of our mobile pages.

From our mobile site, customers can simply call, email, and text us, as well as use their phone’s built in GPS to navigate them to our 40,000 square foot facility if they wish. (We do request customers give us at least a few day’s notice)

Bruce Isabelle, CEO and President of Prototek, had one more thing to say on the subject:”Becoming mobile friendly was an obvious decision. As technology advances, it inevitably becomes smaller and hand-held. It is our prerogative to allow potential customers to find us when on the go or in a pinch, so we created a mobile site with only the most important information and simple contact methods. This is less than a novel event for us, but it could mean finding that one engineer that needs a project done in a day when our competitors are quoting a week’s lead time. We are working on a few more web related projects at the moment, but I would like to wait until they’re finished before disclosing them to the public.”

Prototek is known for their rapid production rates of precision sheet metal and machined products, but now they are gearing their production techniques to a “sky’s the limit” type of mentality. With Six Sigma in mind, Prototek is planning on improving their sheet metal and machining processes to near perfection.

Six Sigma is a methodology which quantitatively puts each and every process under the microscope to describe statistically how an entire process is performing. By using a Six Sigma calculator, Prototek will be able to study each area to find potential mistakes. To achieve Six Sigma, a process must not produce more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities. A Six Sigma defect is defined as anything outside of customer specifications. The fundamental objective of the Six Sigma methodology is the implementation of a measurement-based strategy that focuses on process improvement and variation reduction through the application of Six Sigma improvement projects. At an average of under 100 opportunities for mistakes for each part, Prototek hopes to achieve near perfection in speed and quality of all sheet metal and machined prototypes and short run productions.

Undergoing Six Sigma qualification is not a simple task, as every opportunity for a defect must be strenuously accounted for and plotted on a pareto diagram to find efficiency and quality enhancing routines to be implemented into every day processes. Each employee will have to understand what it means to achieve Six Sigma, as quality and efficiency has always been Prototek’s niche. Adopting a daunting process like Six Sigma will help solidify Prototek’s commitment to on-time deliveries of high quality parts to the industries they serve, and prove to their customers that they will do what it takes to remain at the top of the precision prototyping industry.

Prototek is known for their rapid production rates of precision sheet metal and machined products. They are also known for implementing an entire prototype shop under one roof, including painting, powder coating, assembly, welding, and hardware fastener departments, to name a few. But one of these departments just received a major tech boost.

Enter the Haeger 840-WT-4E hardware fastener machine. This machine stands out from the rest in many ways, including its LCD touchscreen, where operators can save jobs and program all operations into one setup. This is accomplished with its built in four auto feed bowls, with a change over rate of 95% faster than previous models, allowing the changing out of one hardware type in 10 seconds, as opposed to three minutes. This new auto feed systems allows for a feed rate of 40 fasteners per minute. The 4E also comes equipped with tool storage in the side of the machine, and can store all necessary tools for a single job, swapping them out automatically as a part is processed. This machine takes all the time out of setting up jobs in the hardware department, and even allows operators to install hardware in small enclosed boxes like never before possible. Each part will be processed quickly and efficiently with the option of installing hardware in aluminum, steel, stainless steel or copper parts. The machine will use the corresponding pressure based on material and fastener type. With organization, familiarity, and accuracy key in the pemserter department, Prototek is hoping to save their customers even more time on their just-in-time prototype parts.

Prototek’s new LC-C1 punch and laser combo is the perfect tool for rapid precision sheet metal fabrication. Along with their expansion in rapid turn machined parts, stereolithography, and 3D printing, they are still at the top of the rapid precision prototype market.

Due to the nature of their business, Prototek was having difficulty with same day to one week turn times. Tight deliveries from their qualified outside process vendors were becoming more difficult, and they were running out of capacity for the increased volume of prototypes. Decreased quality and extended lead-times are inevitable when dealing with vendors, so Prototek started in-house powder coating, painting, silk screening, plating, and anodizing operations. “This gives us full control over quality and same day finish, allowing our customers to receive high quality, custom complex parts faster than ever.”

The next big obstacle for Prototek was punching parts quickly and efficiently while maintaining the ability to cut intricate geometry. “We were actually punching some parts on our Amada Vipros, then taking those same parts and laser cutting complex contours on our 4000 watt Amada Pulsar laser. It just took too long. After speaking with Steve Yongsma with Amada America, he suggested the new Amada LC-C1 laser/punch combo”

The Amada LC-C1 is the ultimate punch and laser combo, providing flexibility without compromise. A 2.5 kW laser oscillator provides speed, and a vacuum integrated into the turret to remove slugs allows for rapidity and punching geometry 50% smaller than a standard punch press. It has four built in tapping heads, three forming stations, and also countersinks holes.

“Prototek was operating three shifts for punching and laser cutting, which were running at 90% capacity. It was three months ago now we installed the LC-C1, and it has made a tremendous difference in our turn times. We had six employees working in our secondaries department countersinking and tapping, but now four of those employees have moved on to more specialised fields. Since incorporating the LC-C1, Prototek’s sales have increased by another 15%. Additionally, we are now running only 2 shifts in the laser, punch, and laser/punch combo departments at 80% capacity! The LC-C1 is the perfect protoype manufacturing cell for Prototek.”

Prototek continues to be the fastest rapid prototype company in the country and quite possibly the world.

Prototek Sheet Metal Fabrication and Prototek Machining is beginning an outsourcing campaign to developing countries to increase production and lower cost and lead times while retaining only the highest of quality.

Prototek is one of the top companies in the country to offer rapid prototyping of precision sheet metal and CNC machining. This will allow Prototek to become one of the largest quality conscious suppliers of precision sheet metal and CNC machining in the country to emphasize on quick turn around time for their ITAR and non-ITAR customers alike.

“When looking for a good fit with Prototek, hundreds of foreign companies are put through a rigorous process to ensure that quality, pricing, and delivery are to our highest of standards. We have found that by having the parts finished here at our facility by assembling and installing hardware only made in America helps control the quality of our customers’ parts.” Stated Prototek’s production manager, Brian Francoeur.

Some of the developing countries that Prototek has been targeting to find the right quality conscious vendors of quick turn sheet metal and rapid CNC machining are China, Mexico, Malaysia, Peru, Ukraine, and India, as well as a few others. The handful of vendors that complete and pass their testing process must have quality control systems in place starting with the current ISO programs and meet their country’s top quality programs.

Prototek Manufacturing began in 1987 as a family owned and operated business as a supplier of quick turn precision sheet metal and machined products for the prototype markets. Today we are still a family owned and operated business to ensure customers only receive the best sheet metal and machined prototypes and short run production parts. Our quality and turn times continue to be among the best in the industry. Serving industries such as robotics, semi-conductor, telecommunications, military, pharmaceutical, medical, computer technologies and aeronautics, Prototek Manufacturing includes machining, plating, painting, powder coating, silk screening and assembly capabilities all under the same roof to help save our customers time and money on their finished parts requirements.

Prototek continues to decrease lead times, making them the fastest rapid manufacturing and prototype sheet metal and machine shop plant in the country, and possibly the US. Prototek has incorporated painting, plating, powder coating, and silk screening to their list of capabilities, as well as maintaining a large stock of material, PEM hardware, and assembly hardware. These new additions allow Prototek to save the customer days of production time, lowering average lead times by 20%!

Prototek is now able to carry many colors and textures of paint and powder coat, eliminating the need to send sheet metal and machined metal parts out to multiple vendors. They can also plate prototype and production parts with RoHS chromate, anodize, and iridite, and silkscreen in any color and any size.

Prototek’s stock of sheet metal is key in producing quality parts in a limited time frame. With six large rack systems, they almost always have the required material in stock. The same can also be said about their nine large hardware racking systems, carrying about one thousand types of hardware at any given time!

Production meetings are held early every day, covering all jobs coming in, jobs to be programmed, jobs being worked on on, and jobs that have to ship. This allows for all managers to be on the same page, and in a team fashion, strategically place employees on jobs and departments as they see fit to maintain their rapid prototype and production lead times.
