As part of their objective to provide their customers with the highest quality materials, Prototek has recently learned of a toxic chemical masquerading as a superior element providing desired characteristics in some powder coats.

This chemical is known as TGIC (triglycidyl isocyanurate), and has been added to some polyester powder coats to enhance its cover and binder. TGIC’s effects, unfortunately, have also shown negative characteristics in lab tests. According to http://hse.gov.uk, TGIC has a time-weighted average (safe exposure limit) of 0.1 mg/m^3 for 8 hours.

TGIC is classified under the Chemicals Regulation 2002 as toxic, irritant, sensitizing, mutagenic, and dangerous for the environment. It poses the risk of serious damage to eyes, toxic if inhaled or swallowed, causes skin to become overly sensitive, may cause heritable genetic damage, harmful to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in aquatic environments, and more undesirable effects. It is for this reason that Prototek has made the decision to stop carrying TGIC powder coats.

Prototek will no longer be stocking TGIC powder coats as part of their Green Initiative, due to the harmful effects it has on its employees and the environment. Many companies aren’t aware of the toxicity of this chemical on their fabricated parts, so Prototek will begin requesting that customers’ prints and CAD files that request powder coats with the following designated characters switch over to a non-TGIC powder coat alternative:

Contoocook, NH – March 14, 2013 -Prototek Global Manufacturing has seen a need for an online quoting system for budgetary purposes. We believe our customers should be allowed to quickly choose a few variables from a drop-down list on our website, and receive an instant, accurate quote, according to their part’s requirements. As the leaders in quick turn precision prototypes, that is exactly what we intend to bring you.

The prototype manufacturing industry by large operates on quick turn around times, and is highly dependant upon suppliers that can produce precise, quality parts as quickly as possible. The old way of companies submitting a CAD model to a manufacturer and patiently awaiting a quote to be returned is not only slow. It’s unnecessary.

Our new proprietary online quoting program, InstaQuote®, will fill the void that companies have inaccurately assumed is inherent in the industry. There will be no more need to wait for a quotation, only to find you could change a design element or two and save on manufacturing time and cost. Upon visiting our InstaQuote® page for the first time, our customers would initially create an account. Once logged into their account, they will be able to process as many budgetary InstaQuote®s as they would like, as well as view previous quotations, place an order, or submit payment for a job.

Using InstaQuote® is fast and simple. Customers would select their material type and thickness from a drop-down, then how many cutouts, counter sinks, taps, and bends there are, along with a few other variables that may pertain to their job. Once complete, they will be given the option to “uncheck” certain processes from your QuoteTree to see how their quote is affected. After being  satisfied with their InstaQuote®, clicking a Submit button would email both parties the end result as well as saving it in their account.

Prototek’s niche has always been quick turn precision sheet metal and CNC machined parts. InstaQuote® is the only program of its kind, and we are working very diligently to bring it into fruition. We know this will become the industry standard for prototype budgetary analysis.

The Prototek team is very excited to bring to you exactly what you have been waiting for.

Contoocook, NH – March 13, 2013 – Prototek Sheet Metal Fabrication is proud to be reporting another expasion of 3,000 square feet is under way for a new metal anodizing and chromating facility. This new department will not only be state-of-the-art in material plating efficiency; it will also be ACGIH, SMACNA, OSHA, and RoHS compliant and recognized as a Zero-Waste closed-loop treatment center.

Once only capable of handling 15% of their plating requirements in-house, Prototek will now be fully equipped to process over 95% of their precision sheet metal and cnc machined parts that require type I and type II anodizing, clear chromate, gold chromate, hardcoat anodize, and passivation on stainless steel, as well as adding zinc chromate and electroless nickel within the next two years.

Prototek will be utilizing a closed loop ion exchange wastewater treatment and air pollution system controlled from a batch reactor tank superstructure observation platform. The 500 gallon plating tanks and 1,000 gallon treatment tank will be constructed from all natural polypropylene, and an ozone unit will be installed throughout the system to prevent algae growth and maintain cleanliness around the clock. Ion-exchange bottles will help remove any contaminants from the system, recycling the contents back to high quality deionized reusable water.

This fully-certified Zero-Discharge/Zero-Emission plating facility set up is no small project. Everything will be built custom for Prototek’s requirements, from the 65 feet of catwalk dry floor configuration with spill containment flooring to the monorail hoists, boiler, and plating containers. Overall, this will be a 6 month project that will cost around $800,000. Most of the operations will be controlled by automated computer systems will a full alarm system built in. This allows Prototek personnel to focus on what really matters, which is finishing the customers’ parts with the highest level of quality in the shortest time period possible. Prototek always seems to be pushing the possibilities, and this eco-friendly titan of plating lines will allow Prototek to manufacture larger assemblies than ever before in-house. Plating more jobs within their facility translates to faster lead times and higher quality finished products than ever before. Contoocook, NH – May 14, 2012 – Here at Prototek Sheet Metal Manufacturing, we have always realised the importance of visibility on the web since 1990 when we created our own initial web site. Since then, we have been ever expanding our web presence by undergoing site design and coding upgrades to retain quick site load times and user interface simplicity, while including our full capabilities of quick turn sheet metal and machining prototypes and short run productions. As the times change, so do we. We believe it to be imperative to remain cutting-edge in all related fields.

Prototek is proud to announce that we are now mobile friendly on all platforms, including Android, Apple, Blackberry, and Windows phones. We have a separate website for customers who wish to find us on their smart phones. Statistics show that 1/3 of all internet searches are completed from mobile devices now, and statisticians believe by the year 2015, more than half of all web searched will be completed using mobile devices. Evolving with the industry standards and remaining the best at what we do has always been our strong suit, just as quick turn around times of precision metal parts has always been our niche. We hope customers enjoy our new mobile friendly site, but if one wishes, one may go directly to the original site by a link at the bottom of our mobile pages.

From our mobile site, customers can simply call, email, and text us, as well as use their phone’s built in GPS to navigate them to our 40,000 square foot facility if they wish. (We do request customers give us at least a few day’s notice)

Bruce Isabelle, CEO and President of Prototek, had one more thing to say on the subject:”Becoming mobile friendly was an obvious decision. As technology advances, it inevitably becomes smaller and hand-held. It is our prerogative to allow potential customers to find us when on the go or in a pinch, so we created a mobile site with only the most important information and simple contact methods. This is less than a novel event for us, but it could mean finding that one engineer that needs a project done in a day when our competitors are quoting a week’s lead time. We are working on a few more web related projects at the moment, but I would like to wait until they’re finished before disclosing them to the public.”

Prototek being featured in December’s edition of The Fabricator Magazine

Prototek will be featured in the newest edition of The Fabricator, a magazine presenting all new innovations of the high tech industry of rapid production and prototyping. Specifically, Prototek will be accentuated for their purchase of the new LC-C1 punch/laser combination machine from Amada.

Rapid production and prototyping is becoming a bigger industry every year. Staying ahead of the competition is a feat only the adept will accomplish. These are the types of companies The Fabricator is associated with, and exactly why Prototek has been getting so much publicity. Prototek can stay ahead of the competition by incorporating state-of-the-art technologies in a very methodological way, benefiting both the company and the customer. Prototek utilizes a scanning system, where each Prototek employee must scan into the specific procedure he or she will be working on,  so customers can check up on their parts online, and see how their rapid prototypes or  precision production parts are progressing through the shop.

With the addition of the new LC-C1 punch/laser combination machine, Prototek is now able to run fewer shifts on the sheet metal punching and lasering cells, while increasing production throughput, decreasing lead times, and decreasing cost.

“Before purchasing the C1, we were running 3 shifts in our punching and laser cutting departments at 90 percent capacity. Now, we’re running 2 shifts operating at 80 percent capacity, and we’ve increased sales by 15 percent!” Commented Keith Isabelle, General Manager of Prototek.

The LC-C1 has a revolutionary design, decreasing time when switching between turret and laser cutting modules. There is also a vacuum built into the turret, allowing for the punching of holes 50% smaller than traditional turrets! This allows for small geometry and common holes to be punched out of a sheet of metal, while all the contours and complex geometry gets cut by the laser. The combination machine doesn’t stop there though. It also has the capability to tap holes, counter sink holes, and bend parts! Prototek  previously had 6 employees working in secondaries departments doing such tasks, but with with the implementation of the LC-C1, four of these employees were able to switch to more specialized departments. All around, the LC-C1 is the perfect sheet metal prototype and production cell for Prototek.

Prototek is known for their rapid production rates of precision sheet metal and machined products, but now they are gearing their production techniques to a “sky’s the limit” type of mentality. With Six Sigma in mind, Prototek is planning on improving their sheet metal and machining processes to near perfection.

Six Sigma is a methodology which quantitatively puts each and every process under the microscope to describe statistically how an entire process is performing. By using a Six Sigma calculator, Prototek will be able to study each area to find potential mistakes. To achieve Six Sigma, a process must not produce more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities. A Six Sigma defect is defined as anything outside of customer specifications. The fundamental objective of the Six Sigma methodology is the implementation of a measurement-based strategy that focuses on process improvement and variation reduction through the application of Six Sigma improvement projects. At an average of under 100 opportunities for mistakes for each part, Prototek hopes to achieve near perfection in speed and quality of all sheet metal and machined prototypes and short run productions.

Undergoing Six Sigma qualification is not a simple task, as every opportunity for a defect must be strenuously accounted for and plotted on a pareto diagram to find efficiency and quality enhancing routines to be implemented into every day processes. Each employee will have to understand what it means to achieve Six Sigma, as quality and efficiency has always been Prototek’s niche. Adopting a daunting process like Six Sigma will help solidify Prototek’s commitment to on-time deliveries of high quality parts to the industries they serve, and prove to their customers that they will do what it takes to remain at the top of the precision prototyping industry.
